BACKGROUND:

Josh Fox and members of International WOW Company trained in combat techniques with Jason Hartley when filming MEMORIAL DAY the company's first feature film. We decided to offer that training experience to the general public.

JOSH FOX

Josh Fox is the founder and Artistic Director of International WOW Company. Since graduating from Columbia University with a degree in Theater Arts, he has lived in four countries in Asia and traveled to 20 others, creating and producing original international theater works in ten languages.

With International WOW Company he has conceived, written, directed, and/or produced over 30 productions in Thailand, Indonesia, The Philippines, Japan, Germany, France and New York City, which have included You Belong To Me, Death of Nations Part V, "Heimwehen," The Comfort & Safety of Your Own Home (Top Ten of 2004, NY Theatre Wire), Limitless Joy, The Expense of Spirit; Death of Nations, parts 1-4 and The Trailer; Orphan On God's Highway; The BOMB;HyperReal America (Top Ten Shows of 2001, Time Out NY); Soon My Work; This is Not the Ramakian; The Sleeping and the Dead; Stairway to the Stars; and American Interference (Best in the Fringe Festival, Village Voice).

In 2007 Josh completed his first feature film, Memorial Day, produced by Artists Public Domain, Journeyman Pictures and Jim McKay and Michael Stipe's C-Hundred Film Corp. Memorial Day is a genre-bending examination of American culture and the atrocities of Abu Ghraib, where war is a party and partying is a war.

Fox is in development on a Feature Documentary, The Rage of Nature, about the horrors of Natural Gas Drilling which may soon destroy New York City's water system. He collaborated with Jason Hartley in SURRENDER and Memorial Day. INTERNATIONAL WOW COMPANY

JASON CHRISTOPHER HARTLEY

I joined the Army at the age of 17 while I was still in high school. I went to boot camp between my junior and senior years, finished high school, then completed Infantry and Airborne schools with the Army. I have been an infantryman for over fourteen years. In that time I have led and trained soldiers in weapons training, infantry tactics, and most all common warrior tasks. In addition to the technical aspects of soldiering, there are also certain social skills that are implicit to effectively leading troops and garnering cooperation to perform tasks that might seem absurd, counter-intuitive, or impossible.

Just after 9/11 I was stationed between buildings 4 and 5 of the World Trade Center in front of the wreckage of Ground Zero that came to be known among those who worked there as "The Pit". I spent the first eleven days after the attack as part of the de facto perimeter guard. It was there that I sensed I would be wearing a uniform quite a bit over the next few years. Two years later my New York Army National Guard unit was activated to be sent to Iraq.

For the better part of a year I performed as an infantry team leader, leading troops on more than 200 combat missions, including scores of raids and direct contact with the enemy, while in Iraq. We were stationed at Ad Dujayl (aka Dujail), 45 miles north of Baghdad in the heart of the Sunni triangle. Part of our work included gathering countless witness statements from residents who survived the massacre perpetrated upon them in 1982. Our work was crucial in the prosecution and execution of Saddam Hussein. (Being opposed to the death penalty, I find this a dubious honor.)

For the duration of my deployment, I wrote extensively and posted my stories to a blog: justanothersoldier.com. The blog was shut down by the Army after being online for five months, but I continued to write, sending my stories out to a private emailing list. During the penultimate month of my deployment, I resurrected the blog, only to be shut down again by the Army. When I returned, my writings were compiled and published by HarperCollins under the same name. My stories have appeared in numerous periodicals, both in print and online.

Because of the book and blog, I have been interviewed and been part of panels dozens of times on national radio (NPR, Air America), also to include continued regular appearances on BBC radio. I have also appeared on television a handful of times, to include CNN and Fox News.

With Josh Fox, I worked as a military technical adviser on the film "Memorial Day". The training sessions I gave for the actors were filmed and will appear on the bonus features of the DVD when it is released.

INTERNATIONAL WOW COMPANY

International WOW Company is a theater, film and cultural dialogue organization that was created in 1996 by an international group of theater artists to express, represent, question and examine the growing consciousness of international cultural, social, political and aesthetic inter-dependence in the era of globalization. The company was founded by Artistic Director Josh Fox and a group of performing artists from Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, France, Germany and Palestine, to explore the theatrical and social possibilities of long-term international collaboration. In 11 years, International WOW has grown into a vast network, cultivating ongoing relationships with more than 100 actors, dancers, musicians, and technical and visual artists from 31 countries on 5 continents who meet periodically to create new work. Together, we maximize the physical, visual, and aural aspects of theatre to create plays and dramatic events that expand from our most intimate experiences to address issues of a global scale. International WOW projects ask audiences and collaborators to examine their cultural backgrounds and influences, presenting dramatic events that highlight the connective tissue between cultures today and throughout history with a special emphasis on current global crises.

International WOW plays, films, and site-specific dramatic events are devised by international ensembles, which are synthesized by a director or playwright into a dramatic, cathartic whole. Performances exhibit International WOW's theater training and exchange initiatives, which combine physical and narrative performance forms from around the globe to create a highly energetic, explosive and symphonic new form of drama.

Most recently YOU BELONG TO ME (2007) a collaboration with theater artists from Germany, USA, and the Dominican Republic which premiered at PS 122 recieved raves: "Masterful" (Time Out) "Ferocious Passion... Provocative" (NY Times) and "utterly compelling" (Theatermania) as didLIMITLESS JOY (2006) "Visionary" (Time Out) "A theatrical feat of immense proportion, a knockout" nytheatre.com THE EXPENSE OF SPIRIT (2004-5) was hailed as "very powerful" (NY Times), an "astonishing tour-de-force," and "a visceral adventure" nytheatre.com. THE BOMB(2002) was called a "bursting epic" (Time Out NY) and "a world-encompassing theatrical tour-de-force" (Theatermania). International WOW itself has been called "fearlessly inventive," and "virtuosic" (NY Times); "furiously inventive" and "meteoric" (Time Out NY); and "one of the most innovative and prolific theatre companies around" (Theatremania). Most recently, International WOW was cited in Time Out's guide to arts and culture as one of the city's "reliable handful of envelope-pushing ensembles."
